Nature Photography Artist Statement

The intention of my art is to evoke feelings of oneness with nature. The feeling of being utterly mind blown with the beauty of a place, a flower, or a forest; of marveling at the simple perfect beauty that our human form shares with nature. I intend for my art to be a reminder that there’s more to life than all the noise and the nonsense of the modern world. That peace and beauty can be found right outside your door. I intend for my art to serve as a reminder that we have to take care of this place we call home ~ the only planet known to create and sustain life. I want my art to be a window ~ into the world, the self and all the intricate tentacles, idiosyncrasies and mirrors between the two. I hope to make people feel something that brings them to the present, if only for a moment.

I choose to be a photographer because of my love for the magic that cameras create.

The amazing perspectives you can make with a lens and depth of field ~ is literally reality bending. It makes you see everything in a different way ~ you’re always asking of the environment ~ would this make a good image? Would this make an artistic, striking, interesting or memorable image? What can I capture other than pixels? A mood, an energy, a subtle message of moreness. Like Aldous Huxley said, “flowers shining with their own inner light and all but quivering under the pressure of the significance with which they were charged.” There’s an ocean of beauty and meaning in pictures of nature, so much to be said if only someone is there to listen. I am absolutely in love with the process and grateful that I get to be the technician and artist soul of these captured moments suspended in time.

Connecting through the shared experience of loving ourselves and loving the earth.

I hope to impact the world with my art by getting people fired up to go on big adventures to see the places I photograph. I hope that seeing such divine beauty will instill a sense of caring about how special Earth is and that such care will fuel a desire to nurture and look after our beautiful blue planet. That it will challenge people to change their actions in ways to be of service, to give rather than perpetuate the constantly taking our culture has created. We can open our minds to the realization that Earth is a living breathing entity that we get to have the incredible experience of existing and cohabitating with. That we get to have peak experiences with each other by going to see far off reaches of the world, that may not exist forever but have existed unfathomably longer than we have.

Unifying nature with being.

I hope to impact the world with my art by creating shared experiences of connection. Connection to our true peaceful nature and the peace within nature. The wonderful thing about photography is that it can be a shared experience ~ there’s magic in capturing someone in the experience of seeing a new place for the first time, of having an aspect of themselves be frozen in that moment. They get to walk away with a token of that self they were right then and there. It's powerful. Like music, pictures are time machines that take you back to that memory and you get to watch it like a movie and absorb all the feels and energy of your past-self. When we capture ourselves in the embrace of nature it’s like the microcosm uniting with the macrocosm ~ the part being a small reflection of the whole ~ the one into the many.
